Across The Pond

Mumford & Sons

Mumford & Sons

[via FoxyTunes / mumford and sons]

Typically when I hear a banjo, I think bluegrass or country music...right?! Welcome to one of my new favorite bands from London. I really dig the way the music is like a wave...building stronger and stronger. I hope you like this, cause I sure do. Why cant I hear this music on the radio?

Artist: Mumford and Sons
Song: Little Lion Man

weep for yourself, my man,
you'll never be what is in your heart
weep little lion man,
you're not as brave as you were at the start
rate yourself and rape yourself,
take all the courage you have left
wasted on fixing all the problems that you made in your own head

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

tremble for yourself, my man,
you know that you have seen this all before
tremble little lion man,
you'll never settle any of your score
your grace is wasted in your face,
your boldness stands alone among the wreck
learn from your mother or else spend your days biting your own neck

but it was not your fault but mine
and it was your heart on the line
i really fucked it up this time
didn't I, my dear?

Ego

Sebadoh

Sebadoh

[via FoxyTunes / Sebadoh]

During work this week I was reminded of one of my favorite songs. It inspired me to share because my guess is that we all have someone in our lives that occasionally is in serious need of a falcon punch. I love the fact that you can taste the sarcasm in every word of this song. Some of the best lyrics Lou Barlow ever wrote right here folks...Enjoy.

Song: The Freed Pig
Artist: Sebadoh

You were right
I was battling you, trying to prove myself
I tried to bury you with guilt; I wanted to prove you wrong
I've got nothing better to do than pay too much attention to you
It's sad, but it's not your fault
Self-righteous and rude
I guess I lost that cool
Tapping ‘til I drive you insane
I'm self-righteous, but never right
So laid back, but so uptight
Destroying your patience to tolerate me
With all the negative spirit I bring
Right, I was obsessed to bring you down
Watching your every move
Playing a little-boy game
Always with something to prove
Waiting to cut you down, making it hard to live
With only one thing to do
Cut me first, make it easy
Now you will be free
Now that nothing depends on me
Tapping ‘til I drive you insane
Now you will be free
With no sick people tugging on your sleeve
Your big head has that "more room to grow"
A glory I will never know
A glory I will never know

Ran across these dudes last month. I really dig the jangly guitar and the horns vs. the piano. This is a bar anthem. Enjoy.

Shameless Plug

Sailz

I like to share. I have a few of these little corners of my mind floating out there. One of my other "Wastes Of Time" is a little place called Photo Ninja's
. Its a collaborative photo blog. I try to post at least weekly (very weakly) and when I do I upload a new song for visitors to listen to while looking at our photos. This weeks post is a playlist of the songs that have been the soundtrack to Photo Ninja's over the last few months. Its a fun group of tunes. Take the time to look at the work we do over there and if you would like to join...holla.

Thanks to Andy for slipping me this CD. Damn these guys (and Gals) are good. Onstage they have a Manfred Mann kind of vibe...in a Blinded By The Light kind of way. Really dig this tune. Enjoy

Artist: Phenomenal Handclap Band
Song: All of the Above

Here is a great Video of these guys live. They look like a fun group to watch...

School Daze

Stephen Malkmus, Connect Festival

Stephen Malkmus, Connect Festival

[via FoxyTunes / Pavement]

My oldest starts school this week and with that, as always, comes a haircut. Looking back now, I used too much hairspray in school. This is a great anthem for "fitting in" and "getting ahead". Enjoy dammit.

Song: Cut Your Hair
Artist: Pavement

Darlin dont you go and cut your hair
Do you think its gonna make him change?
Im just a boy with a new haircut
And thats a pretty nice haircut
Charge it like a puzzle, hit me wearin muzzles
Hesitate to die, look around, around, the second drummers drowned
His telephone is found

Music scene is crazy, bands start up each and every day
I saw another one just the other day
A special new band
I remember lying
I dont remember lies
I dont remember what
But I dont care, I care, I really dont care
Did you see the drummers hair?

Advertising looks and chops a must
No big hair!!
Songs mean a lot
When songs are bought
And so are you-
Bitch, rant down to the practice room
Attention and fame so
Career, career, career....

White Rabbits (NY; formerly Columbia, MO)

[via FoxyTunes / White Rabbit]

I downloaded this album last week and cant get enough. These dudes know how to craft a hook. There is a myriad of influences present but they make their own music here. I love the foreboding piano and the door knock drums. This is very new shizz so no lyrics yet. These guys have been touring with such luminaries as : The Walkmen, and Spoon, two of my favs. Enjoy!

Silky Smooth

Kathleen Edwards

Kathleen Edwards

[via FoxyTunes / Kathleen Edwards]

I stumbled across this song earlier in the week and I had to share. Kathleen Edwards is a guilty pleasure of mine. She can shred on the guitar and writes a fine song, her music reeks of quality. I love the images she uses for this tune. Hopefully you will too.

Artist: Kathleen Edwards
Song: Buffalo

The summer months left me alone
But the fall rolled in on the back of a storm
In the night you and I drove
Have you ever seen lightning and snow?

All these weeks without a note
It's like a ticking clock
Every time that you phone
I've run aground truth be told
And when it comes to me
I'll let you know

Don't be like that

Just my luck an Irish rose
In a drinking hole
I'd played a thousand one shows
What you need is to just go home
And when it comes to you
Don't leave it alone

Don't be like that

Up ahead the roads were closed
And the Gennys ran most of Buffalo
The customs man at border control
Said yes you can go
But you won't make it home

Don't be like that

Haunting

Gnarls Barkley

Gnarls Barkley

[via FoxyTunes / Gnarls Barkley]

Cee-Lo has a voice that speaks to me. It is so expressive, I am buying whatever he is selling. This is one of my favorite Neo-Soul songs of the last few cycles. I think that people wrote these guys off after "Crazy" but they are still very relevant and stoking some fire on stage as well. I hope you enjoy.

Artist: Gnarls Barkley
Song: St. Elsewhere

I packed a few of my belongings
Left the life that I was living
Just some memories of it
Mostly the ones I can't forget

Whenever you need me I'll be here
Until then my dear
I'm going, I'm going, going there

Don't ask me to make time
To travel back and forth
Let nature take its course
Maybe I'm open from all this ocean air

And if it weren't for you I'd be without
A care setting sail to St. Elsewhere

Anywhere you sit you can see the sun
Unfortunately on this island I'm the only one

And same rules apply on a rainy day
Then it's not such a pretty place to be
It just rains and rains and rains on me

Send a simple sign I can understand
Then a flower grew out that sand
Before you know it I was back out on that sea
Now I don't mind it so much because it's normal
I'm not there, anywhere, St. Elsewhere

Way over yonder there's a new frontier
Would it be so hard for you
To come and visit me here?
I understand
Well just send me a message in a bottle then baby

The Good Old Days

I had the pleasure of seeing Dr Dog again this weekend. This time I wanted to share the experience so I took my camera. The Cave singers opened for Dr. Dog at my favorite dive bar/music venue, Bottletree. I have been a big fan of these gents the last few years and I have blogged about them a few times here as well. They have a very enthusiastic live show. I saw license plates all the way from North Carolina, so I guess the secret is out. The set list was great and so was the energy from the band and crowd. Here is a favorite off the new disc and some photos from the road...with Dr. Dog.

Artist: Dr. Dog
Song: My Friend

My friend says that the end holds nothing more
He don't hide his shame
says its all the same
Like a man without a name
Old days asleep in the shade by the Brandywine
See a dog get paid
see a boy behave
Every bone deserves a grave
But I heard the Good Lord's warning
like he might not forget by the morning
With no more terrifying thoughts of dying
ooh oooooh oooh
My Lord, I'm climbing aboard and I'm going home
No time to lose, no time to pack
Take a step and take it back
But I heard the Good Lord's warning
like he might not forget by the morning
With no more terrifying thoughts of dying
ooh ooooh oooh

Keep on with the living you'll soon enough be dead
You got the whole world spinning in your head
and you don't want to give it up (don't give it up, don't give it up)
Cause no one should be sorry
we're just another day
You can say you'll be back
but you won't ever go away (won't go away, won't go away)
Cause love that never leaves is never ever welcome back
and i'm running out of skin thick enough to hide in (won't go away, won't go away)
Now hand in hand we're back in time we're chasing the train
Looking back looking back to wave goodbye
we're headed for the same disaster (don't give it up, don't give it up)

Spectator

Typically, I find a song that inspires me, and I then go in search for an image to go with the artist on the World Wide Web. Today I am posting with my own photograph of the Band. A few weeks ago I went to my favorite music venue/dive bar in Birmingham called the Bottletree and these guys opened up for a band called Tapes and Tapes. These guys stole the show. They are called Wild Light. They say fuck a lot. I had a great night at this show I am going to prove it by including a slide show of the night. Enjoy

Artist: Wild Light
Song: California On My Mind

Give me a lake that I can dive into
Bury my head in the shit at the bottom
Fuck today
Fuck San Francisco
Fuck California (x2)
I realize I never gave you a chance
I realize I never gave you romance
At the top of the hill
At the top of the hill
Leave me to stream in the current or breeze

Give me a lake that I can dive into
Bury my head in the shit at the bottom
Fuck today
Fuck Oakland
Fuck California
At the top of the hill
At the top of the hill
Leave me to stream in the current or breeze
Leave me to stream in the current or breeze
Leave me to stream in the current or breeze

Happy

Animal Collective, Webster Hall

Animal Collective, Webster Hall

[via FoxyTunes / Animal Collective]

I have been listening to these gents for a few years and am hypnotized by the new album. There is a little bit of Flaming lips mixed with Beach Boys amongst other influences. This tune is becoming a fav off the new disc for me. The chorus makes me happy. It may take a couple listens for the poison to take effect. Its worth the commitment...

Artist: Animal Collective
Song: Bluish

I’m getting lost in your curls
I’m drawing pictures on your skin
So soft it twirls
I like your looks when you get mean
I know I shouldn’t say so but when you
Claw me like a cat, I’m beaming
I like the way you squeeze my hand
Pulling me into another dream
A lucid dream
I’m getting lost in your curls
I’m getting crushed out on the things
that only I should see
Not for boys, they’re just for me

Hurry to talk, from far away
I can see you, you curl your fists and you pull your hair
When we’re alone, I wanna say
Let’s just stay in, no one’s here in our apartment babe

(Put on the dress that I like)
It makes me so crazy, though I can’t say why
(Keep on your stockings for a while)
Some kind of magic in the way you’re lying there

I’m getting lost in your curls
I’m getting rushed back on a whim
Our breaths get wind
Back to the time when we were green
I know we have changed
But I still grin cause I can’t wait to see you
Back to the time I touched your hair
When I was so scared to look that mean
I think it’s weird
I’m getting lost in your curls
I’m getting crushed out on the things
That only I should see
They’re not for boys, they’re just for me

Girl, you can talk from far away
It’s so hard for me
Only to get the urge to kiss you there
When we’re alone, I wanna say
Let’s just stay in, no one’s here in our apartment babe

(Put on the dress that I like)
It makes me so crazy, though I can’t say why
(Keep on your stockings for a while)
Some kind of magic in the way you’re lying there
(repeat)

I am tired

Jenny Lewis

Jenny Lewis

[via FoxyTunes / Jenny Lewis]

Jenny's voice is heaven. I love how this song is like a confession. She makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up and...daddy likey. Hope you enjoy.

Artist: Jenny Lewis and The Watson Twins
Song: Acid Tongue

I went to a cobbler

To fix a hole in my shoe

He took one look at my face

And said, "I can fix that hole in you"

I beg your pardon

I'm not looking for a cure

Seen enough of my friends

In the depths of the godsick blues

You know I am a liar

You know I am a liar

Nobody helps a liar

Because I've been down to Dixie

And dropped acid on my tongue

Tripped upon the land

Until enough was enough

I was a little bit lighter

And adventure on my sleeve

I was a little drunk

And looking for company

So I found myself a sweetheart

With the softest of hands

We were unlucky in love

But I'd do it all again

We build ourselves a fire

We build ourselves a fire

But you know I am a liar

You know I am a liar

And you don't know what I've done

By the rolling river is

Exactly where I was

There was no simple cure

For unlucky in love

To be lonely is a habit

Like smoking or taking drugs

And I've quit them both

But man, was it rough

Now I am tired

It just made me tired

Let's build ourselves a fire

Let's build ourselves a fire

Respect

Etwas Hoeheres by Wolfgang Wildner

Etwas Hoeheres by Wolfgang Wildner

[via FoxyTunes / Aaron Neville]

In light of my first trip to the Big Easy last weekend I wanted to post the song that constantly ran through my head as I walked the streets. I had an inspirational visit. Great way to start the year. I am including some photos from the trip for your enjoyment.

Artist: Aaron Neville
Song: Louisiana 1927 - Written by Randy Newman

What has happened down here is the wind have changed
Clouds roll in from the north and it started to rain
Rained real hard and rained for a real long time
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangeline

The river rose all day
The river rose all night
Some people got lost in the flood
Some people got away alright
The river have busted through cleard down to Plaquemines
Six feet of water in the streets of Evangelne

CHORUS
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tyrin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away
Louisiana, Louisiana
They're tryin' to wash us away
They're tryin' to wash us away

President Coolidge came down in a railroad train
With a little fat man with a note-pad in his hand
The President say, "Little fat man isn't it a shame what the river has
done
To this poor crackers land."

CHORUS

Here are some photo's from my 1st look at Nawlins...
