Story Time

John Hiatt, 2007

John Hiatt, 2007

[via FoxyTunes / John Hiatt]

John Hiatt can write. He has a way of bringing characters to life in his songs...and better yet making you care about them. I always feel like he is singing his heart, feeling seeps from his voice. One of his best here, one of many.

Song: Crossing Muddy Waters
Artist: John Hiatt

My baby's gone and I don't know why
She let out this morning
Like a rusty shot in a hollow sky
Left me without warning
Sooner than the dogs could bark
and faster than the sun rose
Down to the banks in an old mule car
she took a flatboat across the shallow

CHORUS:
Left me in my tears to drown
she left a baby daughter
Now the water's wide and deep and brown
She's crossing muddy waters

Tobacco standing in the fields
be rotten come November
And a bitter heart will not reveal
a spring that love remembers
When that sweet brown girl of mine
her black eyes are ravens
We broke the bread and drank the wine
from a jug that she'd been saving

CHORUS

Baby's crying and the daylight's gone
That big oak tree is groaning
In rush of wind and river of song
I can hear my sweetheart moaning
Crying for her baby child
or crying for her husband
Crying for that river's wild
to take her from her loved ones

CHORUS TWICE

HE is Legend

Eric Clapton Aug. 15, 1975

Eric Clapton Aug. 15, 1975

[via FoxyTunes / Eric Clapton]

It's not everyday I come across an Eric Clapton song I haven't heard. Guitar + Horns = Awesome. This stone cold groove is righteous! Enjoy...

Artist: Eric Clapton
Song: Lonesome and A Long Way From Home

Out on an open highway,
Such a lovely day but something's wrong.
Something, something's gotta be wrong.

I just left home this morning,
This old road keeps rolling on and on.
Rolling, rolling on and on.

Won't somebody help me?
Won't somebody help me?
Won't somebody help me?
I've never been so lonesome and long way from home,
Never been lonesome and long way,
Never been lonesome and long way from home.

Chorus

The Stills, at Dawson College benefit concert aims to send a message to the whole community

[via FoxyTunes / The Stills]

Sometimes you know that you shouldn't like a song or a band because..well because they are just too damn catchy. The Stills are a case study of this problem for me. They are polished, cool, and write a really good hook a little too Matchbox 20 for me. Usually I run for zee hills. The album this song came from became one of my favorites last year, and really the only reason they aren't a guilty pleasure is because nobody else has heard of them. So I can lower my indie standards secretly. Love the baseline on this one.

Song:Gender Bombs
Artist:The Stills

brains on a brick wall
when gender bombs they fall
the sordid way her loaded phrases infiltrate your skull

the images are strong
impulses are strong
and logic will break your heart forever
be brave

massive suicide dreams
the feel warm and long
the girl will school you
the girl will...

could this be the gaining force
of ten loves in a row
drunken sunday evenings
will just be innuendos

massive suicide dreams
that feel warm and long
the girl will school you
the girl will school you
the girl will screw you
the girl will screw you
the girl will school you
the girl will screw you
the girl will screw you
the girl will screw you

This song sounds a little melancholy because it is. "I'm not depressed but I want to be" is the message I keep getting. I think there is a small amount of hope in the lyrics so I am going to keep my head up and out of the oven. Enjoy

Song: There Goes the Sun
Artist: Pernice Brothers

now always, i wait for you
to take this pale opaque and let some light go through
kicked the life from me, left a headless drum
crushed the rabbit cage of my skeleton
overload on "lets get lost"
scratched your farewell couplet in my window frost
kicked the life from me and non better comes
till one better comes, there goes the sun.

hope theres love where you may land
let this frost heave open up and take me in
kick this life from me till one better comes
till one better comes, there goes the sun

Bunf&Gruff

[via FoxyTunes / Super Furry Animals]

I just wanted to say that I am glad that someone finally wrote a song about something we are all afraid of. Those babies have always got their eyes on my stash! At least now, with this tune, you can remember to keep those stash stealin' babies at bay! I am trying a new service for my little player. Let me know what you think.

Song: Baby Ate My Eightball
Artisit: Super Furry Animals

Baby, baby, baby.
Baby ate my eight ball.
Frothing at the mouth ascending to heaven.
Mental note to self:
Keep in safe place away from harm.
Baby, baby, baby.
Baby ate my eight ball.
Frothing at the mouth ascending to heaven.
See you on the other side.
Sorry to cut your life so short.
Mental note to self:
Keep in safe place away from harm.
Baby, baby, baby.
Baby ate my eight ball.
Baby, baby, baby.
Baby ate my eight ball.
Frothing at the mouth ascending to heaven.
Baby, baby, baby.
Baby ate my eight ball.
Baby, baby, baby.

Smarts

vampire weekend, originally uploaded by surgery.

I think I am too dumb to know what this song is (Oxford Comma?). The tune gets me though, I dig these guys. Enjoy

Song: Oxford Comma
Artist: Vampire Weekend

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?
I've seen those English dramas too, they're cruel
So if there's any other way to spell out what it's found with me, with me

Why would you speak to me that way
Especially when I always said that I
Haven't got the words for you
All your diction, dripping with disdain
Through the pain, I always tell the truth.

Who gives a fuck about an Oxford comma?
I climbed to Dharamsala too, I did.
I met the highest Lama
His accent sounded fine to me, to me

Take your handbook, it's no trick
Take the chapstick, put it on your lips
Crack a smile, adjust my tie
Know your boyfriend unlike other guys

Why would you lie 'bout how much coal you have?
Why would you lie 'bout somethin' dumb like that?
Why would you lie 'bout anything at all?
First the window, then it's to the wall
Lil Jon, he always tells the truth

Take your passport, it's not trick
Take the chapstick, put it on your lips
Crack a smile, adjust my tie
Know your brother unlike other guys

Why would you lie 'bout how much coal you have?
Why would you lie 'bout somethin' dumb like that?
Why would you lie 'bout anything at all?
First the window, then it's to the wall
Why would you take my conversations?
Show your findings at the United Nations
Lil Jon, he always tells the truth

02|23|2007 (104/365) The Idiot's Guide to Blowing up Balloons

[via FoxyTunes / Tegan and Sara]

I found this song the other a day and it reminded me so much of High School so much I broke out in pimples. In a good way. Its all cleared up now..Thanks for asking.

Song: Call It Off
Artist: Tegan and Sara

I won't regret saying this
This thing that I'm saying
Is it better than keeping my mouth shut
That goes without saying
Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at
But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case I go there
Everyday, to make myself feel bad
There's a chance that I'll start to wonder if this was the thing to do
I won't be out long
But I still think it better if
You take your time coming over here
I think that's for the best
Call, break it off
Call, break my own heart
Maybe I would have been something you'd be good at
Maybe you would have been something I'd be good at
But now we'll never know
I won't be sad
But in case I go there
Everyday, to make myself feel bad
There's a chance that I'll start to wonder if this was the thing to do
I'll start to wonder if this was the thing to do

Lucky

My Brightest Diamond

My Brightest Diamond

[via FoxyTunes / My Brightest Diamond]

I am sharing another cover song this week. I've been a Radiohead fan for a long time and this cover does them proud. Its very eerie and futuristic, and on top of it all beautiful. So i introduce to you "My Brightest Diamond"...enjoy

Song: Lucky
Artist: My Brightest Diamond

I'm on a roll,
I'm on a roll this time
I feel my luck could change.

Kill me Sarah,
kill me again with love,
it's gonna be a glorious day.

Pull me out of the aircrash,
Pull me out of the lake,
'cause i'm your superhero,
we are standing on the edge.

The head of state has called for me by name
but I don't have time for him.
It's gonna be a glorious day!
I feel my luck could change.

Pull me out of the aircrash,
Pull me out of the lake,
'cause i'm your superhero,
we are standing on the edge.

We are standing on the edge.

Artist: Caribou

Stay Tuned

ambulance_ltd

ambulance_ltd

[via FoxyTunes / Ambulance LTD]

These guys have been on my favorites play list for over a year. I recently read they have since broken up, and I am sad. They made some good music and I will miss their jangly guitary goodness. So RIP Ambulance LTD, I for one will stay tuned..

Song: Stay Tuned
Artist: Ambulance LTD

What would I do without it?
Think I'll get down like then
I've got to move or sinking
And I only came to when

Stay pretty
I'll come back sometime and soon
And while I'm away: stay tuned

I'll get a suit and a rocket
And take to the end of the space
You make me wanna say pretty things
To leave me far away

Look up and I put your flag on the moon
And while we're away: stay tuned
Stay tuned, stay tuned, stay tuned

Stay tuned, stay tuned
Stay tuned, stay tuned
Stay tuned, stay tuned
Stay tuned, stay tuned

Weakness

Cat Power Kiss

Cat Power Kiss

[via FoxyTunes / Cat Power]

Last year I discovered Ms. Cat Power. She has a way of singing a song that hearkens back to the olden days, with lyrics that are very contemporary. She has a presence. Piano and a soulful voice. I also love that her backing band on this album were the guys that backed up Otis Redding. She has a good sense of history with a modern slant is what I'm trying to say. Enjoy...

Song: Willie
Artist: Cat Power

willie deadwilder and rebecca
they knew that they loved one another
gonna have a real good time
no more sad sad bad times
it's all they've been waiting for
someon to knock at the door

willie was shot once in his mind
and his cry out saved his own life
the second time was through the heart
the doctors pulled the bullet from inside
he had a job to do he said
that's his way of life

please don't bring him down
please don't let him go
he's on the same side as you
he's just a little behind

i tell ya there are some people living alone
i tell ya there are some people with nowhere to go
there are some people who don't believe in love
but willie and rebecca prove 'em all wrong

a man named john wrote a song for me to sing
and the most beautiful flowers i have ever seen
he is a very good man
and he has been an even very good man to me
i hope one day his song i will sing
another love i still love
familiar face to me
a standing arch above my heart

i've never been to reach
he's laid my head on the bed
and told me sweetly i am not
crazy like all the others said
no he's not crazy like me

please don't bring me down
please don't let me go
my heart is a worried thing
memories have planted seeds of a field i now
want to reap and sow
i'm on the same side as you
i'm just a little bit behind

(have you seen him)

Feelings

Tom Petty & Heartbreakers Spokane 3

Tom Petty & Heartbreakers Spokane 3

[via FoxyTunes / Tom Petty]

I am a huge fan of good cover songs. I think that being a Phish fan for the past decade has opened my mind to that. I say opened my mind because it takes an open mind to let a another voice say something different using the same words. So I am going to sprinkle in some of my all time favorite cover songs on here for your consumption. I'm starting this series off with a question.."Who is Tom Petty covering here?"

Artist: Tom Petty
Song: Asshole

Your brains went black
When she took back her love
And put it out into the sun
The birds did fly
When the heavens all went dry
And the cigarettes were smoking by themselves

Shell do anything
Shell do anything
Shell do anything
To make you feel like an asshole

Call her name
She looks the same as you
Question marks stretched across her skin
She dangles carrots
Makes you feel embarrassed
To be the fool you know you are

Shell do anything
Shell do anything
Shell do anything
To make you feel like an asshole

Crazy Welch Bastards

super furry animals

super furry animals

[via FoxyTunes / Super Furry Animals]

Another of my favorite bands here. I always love when someone says "Who are these guys they sound awesome?" and I say "Super Furry Animals!" and they say "Huh?" and I slap them. They remind me of another band "Ween" on originality. These guys put an album together in which it could be a different band playing each song on it. I am a huge fan of musicians that can show their range..and still sound tight. This song doesn't sound like any other song on an album of really great tunes. Check them out.

Song: The Piccolo Snare
Artist: Super Furry Animals

Have you ever seen the sun
Rising high to the sound of a gun?
Blue and white and yellow sun
Capturing imagination
We went down to the piccolo drum
Never made it into the hum
Down to the piccolo
Down to the piccolo
Down to the piccolo snare

Have you ever seen the sea
Painted red by a bleeding army?
Sky hawks gather for a feast
Of pawns who will never find peace
Tumbledown to the piccolo snare
Never made it into the square
Down to the piccolo
Down to the piccolo
No one particular cared

Dreaming, dreaming, dreaming

Now! We can go home again
To our old haunts again
Together
Now scatter us all around
Far from the bugle sound
Surrender
Safe in the exclusion zone
Catch me and take me home
As brother fights brother
Wrapped up in tarnished flags
Banners and body bags
Surrender!
The power!
Phantom!
Dreaming, dreaming, dreaming

Just Relax

Calexico at Leicester Summer Sundae

Calexico at Leicester Summer Sundae

[via FoxyTunes / Calexico]

When I hear Calexico, I want to learn how to play . I know this is a corny statement, but damn they are tight. They have such a huge range of sound from Latino to country to rock and back again, all in the same album. This song was on the album "Garden Ruin" and was one of my favorite tracks. Recently I found this acoustic version and discovered the song all over again. Something about this song exudes "Go West Young Man" to me. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Song: All Systems Red
Artist: Calexico

Felt a tremor stir beneath my breath
That forecasts storms on the gallup poll
Waking up from the nightmare news
Hoping to read a sign in the morning air

Nothing changes here and nothing improves
All say my friends who just want out
And leave these troubles behind
Scatter like paper in the eye of the storm
Documented with a silenced note
That's only heard from far away

More cards in play, following suit
Everywhere you look, you only see red
Wonder when to call off the race
Watching a horse running down its last legs
When you think it couldn't get much worse
The numbers rise on the death toll
And the chimes of freedom flash and fade
Only heard from far, far away

I hear you can't trust in your own
Now the grey is broken in the early morn
And the words forming barely have a voice
It's just your heart that's breaking without choice

Everything you hear is distorted in your head
Bouncing off the walls, unraveling the thread
Staying up with the blue screen glow
Forgetting everything you ever dreamed years ago

When the dread is flowing down my veins
I want to tear it all down and build it up again
Hear your heart that's breaking without choice
I want to hear those chimes ring again
Ring again

Common Thread

Right now I am wondering.."How is this not being played all over the place?" Great voice, great energy, great period. These guys (gal) have put a great album together, sometimes sugary sometimes salty. I hope you check it out. I am bursting with good new music..if you're not careful you will get it all over you. I think its a great time to be a music fan.

Song: All This Time
Artist: Heartless Bastards

I own this place, it's part of me
It fills me up and swallows me
My emotions wrapped in vines
Are reaching for the sun that shines
Oh, I must say I adore you
But sometimes I seem to ignore you
That's because I don't deserve to
Have your love for me ever

All this time, I wanted you to know
That if you're ever, ever feeling low
You can always count on -- on me
To be there whenever you need

Since you took my breath again
Would you share your oxygen?
I can breathe one breath of air
Intoxicated by your stare
Standing in the middle of the street
Oh, please don't run over me
I been trying, trying to finally
Reach for a sun that shines

All this time, I wanted you to know
That if you're ever, ever, ever feeling low
You can always count on -- on me
To be there whenever you need

Oh, I love you so much baby
You are my -- you are my rising sun!
Oh, I love you so much baby
You are my -- you are my setting sun!

You are my rising sun
You are my setting sun
You are my rising sun
You are my setting sun

The album this song comes from is also "All This Time"

Hopeless Romantic

Peter Bjorn and John

This is another random song that popped up in my collection that just screams to be heard. Its a cover of another great band called "The Concretes"..but I think that PBandJ does a great job making it their own. I will be getting back to my "Songs That Will Be In My Movie(s)" in the future. Over the last few posts I began to think "Hey... my movie doesn't sound very original". This just wont do. So I have decided to put more effort into making something that is from my imagination and not someone else's. Anyhoo I love the energy in this tune..hope you do too.

Artist: Peter Bjorn and John
Song: Teen Love

I hope everything's alright with you
Maybe I should go and see about you
Collect some love, if you don't mind
Collect some love, if you don't mind, no

My heart it grows

I smile a second, then it's gone
When I realize I'm all alone
Why is it so hard? No, I won't cry
Why is it so hard? No, I won't cry

My heart it grows

Fallin'
Fallin' in
I've fall'n in love with you

Carry me home, the night is dark and long
I think I'm done with all the people taking part
So I move much closer, I don't mind
And I leave a mark on your face, I don't mind, no

My heart it grows

Fallin'
Fallin' in
I've fall'n in love with you

Fallin'
Fallin' in
I've fall'n in love with you

Fight Scene

Elvis Perkins

Elvis Perkins

[via FoxyTunes / Elvis Perkins]

Our hero at some point meets his true love. Of course this scares him, and he runs away from his feelings and responsibly to someone else. As he tears down the life he has worked hard to build, burns his bridges, breaks her heart, I envision this song playing. As he goes from fear to rage to the slow realization that he has ruined two lives our hero observes that he has been sleeping. This is the third song from my "Songs That Will Be In My Movie(s)" posts. Lately I have been listening to this artist and though very somber he conveys a hope with his lyrics that I really enjoy.

Song: While You Were Sleeping
Artist: Elvis Perkins

while you were sleeping
the babies grew
the stars shined and the shadows moved
time flew, the phone rang
there was a silence when the kitchen sang
its songs competed like kids for space
we stared for hours in our maker's face
they gave us picks
said go mine the sun
and go gold and come back when you're done
while you were sleeping
you tossed, you turned
you rolled your eyes as the world burned
the heavens fell, the earth quaked
i thought you must be, but you weren't awake
no, you were dreaming
you ignored the sun
you grew your power garden
for your little ones
and you found brides for them on christmas eve
they hung young cain from the adam trees
and danced
while you were sleeping
i tossed and i turned
til i closed my eyes
but the future burned
through the planet turned a hair gray
as i relived the day
while you were sleeping
the money died
machines were harmless and the earth sighed
through the wind you slept sound
and gravity caught my love around
the ocean rose, sang about decay
while witches flew
and the mermaids stayed
full of dreams, you overslept
and keeping with quiet, through the walls i crept
i walked on tiptoe, sent darkness swirling over all the kitchen in the early morning
i'll never catch up to you
who sleeps so sound
my arms are useless
my heart beats too loud to go to sleep
my mind's too proud to bow out
while you were sleeping
the time changed
all your things were rearranged
your vampire mirrors face to face
they saw forever out into space
and found you dreaming in black and white
while it rained in all the colors of the night
i watched the tvs
memories
championships
vanished to sea
could it be, my honey between you and me
so i waited for the riddled sky
to dissolve again by sunrise
and i've made a death suit for life
for my father's ill widowed wife
did you have that strangest dream before you woke
cos in your gown you had the butterfly stroke
did it escape you like some half told joke?
when you reached for your plume of smoke
it'll haunt you, my honey bee
anyone who is anyone has that same dream
were you falling
were you flying
and were you calling out
or were you dying
thank god you're up now
let's stay this way
else there'll be no mornings
and no more days
cos when we're dreaming
our babies grow
the sun shines
and the shadows flow
time flies
the phone rings
there is a silence
and everybody tries to sing

Inspiration

clem snide

clem snide

[via FoxyTunes / Clem Snide]

I will get back to my "Songs That Will Be In My Movie(s)" posts next time. Today I wanted to share a song that due to some inspiration this week I felt was appropriate. This is a terrific tune that says a lot...and you can easily sing along....

Song: Fill Me With Your Light
Artist: Clem Snide

A true seduction’s what it is
The parts are neither hers nor his
I would prefer you don’t remove your gloves

The instruments shaped like a pear
The inside lined with rabbit hair
If you squint your eyes it seems to fit

Fill me with your light
I will not make a sound
Always throw the fight
And take it lying down

If you wear the mermaid’s suit
There’ll be no sliding down your chute
My sailors left to flounder in your wake

See the bubble, it goes pop
A false start, an unlikely stop
I’m not convinced of anything I say

Fill me with your light
I will not make a sound
Always throw the fight
And take it lying down

There’s a different kind of dark
The kind that stops the dogs to bark
It never has to wait for setting suns

Inside the egg finds pantyhose
And holds ‘em right up to your nose
The energy must somehow be absorbed

Fill me with your light
I will not make a sound
Always throw the fight
And take it lying down

The Big City

sufjan stevens 2

sufjan stevens 2

[via FoxyTunes / Sufjan Stevens]

The scene is this...Our hero, as a young man, is moving from the hills of Kentucky to the big city of Chicago. This song starts when they are on the interstate (I 90?) when the hero starts to see the city. The song begins in the south suburbs as he slowly moves (due to traffic..which is new to him) towards the city. The songs end culminates with our hero's arrival at his new "Big City' apartment. This is song two in a series of "Songs that will be in my movie(s)" posts.

Song: No Man's Land
Artist: Sufjan Stevens

Up in the highest of heights
O'Hara blinks and fights
This land is yours; this land is mine.
I see the Captain in red,
and Cairo at his head.
This land is yours; this land is mine.

The lightning over the park,
the waters--brash and dark
We take a swim; we take a swim.
I never meant to escape
the carpet and the trade
This land is yours; this land is mine.

And when I make up my mind
I change it all the time
I take it back; I take it back.
The numbers over the dam,
Jo Davies and the band,
I count them out; I count them out.

There was a car in the bay
by the boat that swept and swayed
Whoever you are in the light
in the water that we made
I'm counting it out
I'm counting it out
I'm working it out inside
I'm counting it out
to the floor

The ferry hatches Moline
Panola Beauty Queen
She takes a bow; she takes a bow.
In Charles, we climb the hill
and Danville window sill
I take it back; I take it back.
My sister she counts the bars,
the Macon county cars,
She takes a bow; she takes a bow.

The Mississippi amends
the Carver and the bends
This land is yours; this land is mine.
My brother punches my ear.
The injured ivory deer
I call my dad; I call my dad.
We skip inside of the store
the Mason winter door
This land is yours; this land is mine.

There was a car in the bay
by the boat that swept and swayed
Whoever you are in the light
in the water that we made
I'm holding your hand by the shore
With our collars pulled up tight
I'm counting it out
I'm counting it out
I'm working it out inside
I'm counting it out

(This land is not your land
For the right hand takes what it can,
ransacks with the mad man.
For this land is not yours or mine to have.
This land was made for the good of itself.)

The End Song

neutral milk hotel

neutral milk hotel

[via FoxyTunes / Neutral Milk Hotel]

From the moment I heard this song I knew that I wanted to put it in my movie. When I get around to making said movie this song will start to play at the very end...after I have saved the girl and the credits start to roll. This is going to be the first in a series of "Songs That Will Be In My Movie(s)" posts.

Song: In the Aeroplane Over the Sea
Artist:Neutral Milk Hotel

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
What a beautiful dream
That could flash on the screen
In a blink of an eye and be gone from me
Soft and sweet
Let me hold it close and keep it here with me

And one day we will die
And our ashes will fly from the aeroplane over the sea
But for now we are young
Let us lay in the sun and count every beautiful thing we can see
Love to be
In the arms of all I'm keeping here with me

What a curious life we have found here tonight
There is music that sounds from the street
There are lights in the clouds
Anna's ghost all around
Hear her voice as it's rolling and ringing through me
Soft and sweet
How the notes all bend and reach above the trees

Now how I remember you
How I would push my fingers through
Your mouth to make those muscles move
That made your voice so smooth and sweet
But now we keep where we don't know
All secrets sleep in winter clothes
With one you loved so long ago
Now he don't even know his name

What a beautiful face
I have found in this place
That is circling all round the sun
And when we meet on a cloud
I'll be laughing out loud
I'll be laughing with everyone I see
Can't believe how strange it is to be anything at all

Radio is Fuzzy

...as she drove away ,she yelled-"i'll always love you"

[via FoxyTunes / Jim White]

This song has some great imagery and an interesting view on where we seem to get all of our information. I love the low key delivery...and the cameo by Aimee Mann.

Song: Static on the Radio
Artist: Jim White

3 A.M. I’m awakened by a sweet summer rain… distant howling of a passing southbound coal train. Was I dreaming or was there someone just lying here beside me in this bed? Am I hearing things? Or in the next room, did a long forgotten music box just start playing? And I know ¾ it’s a sin putting words in the mouths of the dead. And I know ¾ it’s a crime to weave your wishes into what they said. And I know — only fools venture where them spirits tread. ‘Cause I know ¾ every word, every sound bouncing ‘round my head. Is just static on the radio. Everything I think I know is just static on the radio. Midnight rendezvous with a pretty girl, wearing a torn and tear-stained gown. Like a ghost ship she appeared from nowhere on a lonely highway and flagged me down. I gave her a lift downtown to the Greyhound station and in the flicker of the neon lights, she kissed me goodbye, and in the mirror of her eyes I saw my own reflection. And I know ¾ the blind will sometimes lead the blind. And I know ¾ through shadow lands and troubled times. And I know ¾ forsaking love, we seek the signs. And I know ¾ of truths forever hid behind. The static on the radio. Everything I think I know is just static on the radio. Now there’s a church house about a stone’s throw down from this place where I been staying. It’s Sunday morning, and I’m sittin’ in my truck listening to my neighbor sing. Ten years ago I might have joined in, but don’t time change those inclined to think less of what is written than what’s wrote between the lines? ‘Cause I know ¾ dreams are for those who are asleep in bed. And I know ¾ it’s a sin putting words in the mouths of the dead. ‘Cause I know ¾ for all my ruminations I can’t change a thing. Still I hope ¾ there’s others out there who are listening. To the static on the radio. Everything I think I know is just static on the radio. Ain’t praying for miracles, I’m just down on my knees. Listening for the song behind everything I think I know. Everything I think I know is just static on the radio. Everything I think I know is just static on the radio

No. Not all Country music has lyrics like a Hallmark card.

Neko Case - Oran Mor0234

Neko Case - Oran Mor0234

[via FoxyTunes / Neko Case]

Artist: Neko Case
Song: Hold On

The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it's unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time
Hangin' round the ceiling half the time

Compared to some I've been around
But I really tried so hard
That echo chorus lied to me with its
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on"

In the end I was the mean girl
Or somebody's in-between girl
Now it's the devil I love
And that's as funny as real love

I leave the party at three a.m.
Alone, thank God
With a valium from the bride
It's the devil I love
And that's as funny as real love
And that's as real as true love

That echo chorus lied to me with its
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on"

That echo chorus lied to me with its
"Hold on, hold on, hold on, hold on"

Summer Esta Aqui

Ted Leo

Ted Leo

[via FoxyTunes / Ted Leo]

For some reason this song makes me think of summer. I have been listening to Ted Leo for a few years now and the new album is very accessible to new fans. He does have a political hardon, but he still makes rockin' music. I guess the best way to describe Senor Leo is passionate.

Artist: Ted Leo and The Pharmacists
Song: La Costa Brava

I've been seeing the same old things,
And I've been hearing you saying some things that you don't mean.
Everyone needs a sunday some days, everyone needs to take some time away.
So come on home from the front lines, baby,
You know you've done more than your time there was supposed to have been.
A little time out could turn your head 'round,
A little time out could lift us our of the mess we're in.
And down by the beach there's a small cafe,
Where we'll hang on for Joan and drink Bonet all day.
So come on over to St. Feliu 'cause it's somewhere I've been and I want to take you there.
You know that waking up to the daily blues from
Waking up to the daily news ain't nothing strange.
Everyone gets to feeling weak,
But if everyone gets to take a week and change their pace...
You travel west 'til you hit Girona, I'll travel east out of Barcelona,
And I'll meet you halfway.
One day and night on La Costa Brava, we'll forget the fright,
And remember why we want to be brave,
(and that there's something to save)
Like down by the beach there's a veg cafe,
Where we'll meet Lolo and Pablo and drink Moritz all day.
So come on over to St. Feliu 'cause it's somewhere I've been and I want to take you there.
We'll meet Berta, and Daniel, and Remy, Celine, and Mike, Adriana, Padi, and Aziz,
And Maurix, Maria, and Laura, Tule,
And Sherry and Pau, Jodie, and Paul,
I hope Neil is OK...

Great Cover

Dr. Dog @ The Middle East - Cambridge, MA - 4/26/07

Dr. Dog @ The Middle East - Cambridge, MA - 4/26/07

[via FoxyTunes / Dr. Dog]

Personally I'm not a huge fan of the band Dr. Dog is covering here, but they definitely make this song their own. After listening to both versions, This one wins hands down. Let me know what you think..

Song: Heart It Races
Artist: Dr. Dog

and we slow to acknowledge the knots in the laces
heart it races!

and we go back to where we moved out to the places
heart it races!

i bought it in a can and stirred it with my fingers
threw it out the window
lately you've been tan, suspicious for the winter
looks like little splinters

i sold it to a man
and threw him out that window he went boom
made his wife a widow

heart it races!

Wishful Singing

Leslie Feist

Leslie Feist

[via FoxyTunes / Feist]

The new Feist album is fantastic, this song in particular i like. Personally it reminds me of my parents. They moved us from the "old dirt road" (Kentucky) to a little "Second floor living without a yard" in Chicago. That, my friends, was a culture shock. Still one of the bravest things two parents ever did, and I thank them for it. I'm still waiting for my pay to catch up to my dreams though. Enjoy.

Song: Mushaboom
Artist: Feist

Helping the kids out of their coats
But wait the babies haven't been born
Unpacking the bags and setting up
And planting lilacs and buttercups

But in the meantime I've got it hard
Second floor living without a yard
It may be years until the day
My dreams will match up with my pay

Old dirt road
Knee deep snow
Watching the fire as we grow old

I got a man to stick it out
And make a home from a rented house
And we'll collect the moments one by one
I guess that's how the future's done

How many acres how much light
Tucked in the woods and out of sight
Talk to the neighbours and tip my cap
On a little road barely on the map

Old dirt road
Knee deep snow
Watching the fire as we grow old
Old dirt road Rambling rose
Watching the fire as we grow well I'm sold

Clap Rock

Of Montreal | Le Bataclan, Paris

Of Montreal | Le Bataclan, Paris

[via FoxyTunes / Of Montreal]

This is an insanely catchy song that gets stuck inside my head regularly. These guys are from Atlanta, and completely insane. After listening to this song I had to find out what a poppet was, now I will share my knowledge with you... a poppet is: "British Dialect. a term of endearment for a girl or child." You are welcome.

Song: Disconnect the Dots
Artist: Of Montreal

Come disconnect the dots with me poppet come disconnect the dots
Come disconnect the dots with me poppet come disconnect the dots

It's so beautiful
Our lunacy
It's so beautiful
Ah!

Spring Love Song...Ahhhh

02-16 Dr. Dog in Philadelphia (14)

02-16 Dr. Dog in Philadelphia (14)

[via FoxyTunes / Dr. Dog]

Like most losers spring brings a lift to my step. The flowers are perty, the World in general just seems a little less suck. This spring I have really taken a shine to the band Dr. Dog. They have been playing on my mp3 player since I downloaded the album "We All Belong" last month. If you have been interacting with me in the past month I probably had this song going through my head (explains a lot?). I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

Artist: Dr. Dog
Song: Keep a Friend

Even rich men ask for more,
Well I ain't poor
But I'm a beggar for your love
And enough it ain't enough
You can call me crazy
You can call me anything you like

Even gluttons got to eat,
Well I ain't weak
But I hunger for your love
And enough it ain't enough

Well I'd pawn my heart if I thought you'd break it
Sell my soul if I thought you'd take it
But every smile and conversation lets me know that you're only in it for love

I intend to keep a friend in love
Please remember, I don't pretend in love

Even kings they ask for more,
Well I ain't sure
But I'm a pauper for your love
And enough it ain't enough
You can call me crazy
You can call me anything you like

Even rivers ask for rain,
Well I ain't sand
But I'm a desert for your love
And enough it ain't enough

Well I'd pawn my heart if I thought you'd break it
Sell my soul if I thought you'd take it
But every smile and conversation lets me know that you're only in it for love

I intend to keep a friend in love
Please remember, I don't pretend in love

I intend to keep a friend in love
Please remember, I don't pretend in love

World Party

goodbye jumbo - world party

goodbye jumbo - world party

[via FoxyTunes / World Party]

I think that this is one of those songs that makes you think of a certain time of your life, for me this song screams high school. There is an optimism that makes you think "I will change the world...if only I could get in a car and drive it around the world (impossible)" . Since I've gotten older I realize that it takes a little more than that. When ever this song pops up in the rotation I am taken back to cruising the strip in Crystal Lake..and hanging out at Subway (Pathetic). If you have a song that evokes that feeling...leave it below.

Artist: World Party
Song: Put the Message in the Box

And if you listen now
You might hear
A new sound coming in
As an old one disappears
See the world in just one grain of sand
You better take a closer look
Don't let it slip right thru your hand
Won't you please hear the call
The world says

CHORUS
Put the message in the box
Put the box into the car
Drive the car around the world
Until you get heard

Now is the moment
Please understand
The road is wide open
To the heart of every man
A few simple words
So a mule could understand
He don't want tomorrow
If it's just crumbling into sand
Won't please hear the call
She says

CHORUS

Until you get heard

The World says
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your love to me
Cos I'm waiting right here with my open arms
Give a little bit
Give a little bit of your soul to me
Cos I'm waiting to behold your many charms
Is that love in the air?
She says

CHORUS

Until you get heard
Until you get heard
Until you get heard
Until you get heard

Love this track.

Back to black.mp3

Song: Back to Black
Artist: Amy Winehouse

He left no time to regret
Kept his dick wet
With his same old safe bet
Me and my head high
And my tears dry
Get on without my guy
You went back to what you knew
So far removed from all that we went through
And I tread a troubled track
My odds are stacked
I'll go back to black

We only said good-bye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to.....

I go back to us

I love you much
It's not enough
You love blow and I love puff
And life is like a pipe
And I'm a tiny penny rolling up the walls inside

We only said goodbye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to

Black, black, black, black, black, black, black,
I go back to
I go back to

We only said good-bye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to

We only said good-bye with words
I died a hundred times
You go back to her
And I go back to black

I have a soft spot for horns in pop music. These guys have a great sound. This was the song that really turned me on to them. Hope you enjoy.

Song:Quattro (World Drifts In)
Artist:Calexico

Love the run but not the race
all alone in a silent way
world drifts in and the world’s a stranger
in a light, eclipsed and alienated
in a time, occupied and invaded
can’t tell what’s right, better hit the ground running
in the hills where the tall weed grows
hands are tied and won’t let go
can’t escape this place without leaving the world behind
in a light, ashamed and humiliated
in a time, sacrificed for the sake of trade
the soul is bent, feels the weight of truth
falling through
left behind, no choice but to run to the mountains
where no poppies grow, you have to hit the ground running
in a light, paralyzed and spirits fading
out of time, must decide to fall or run
into the eye, of the storm no sign or omen
make it right, or fall to the other side
where fields are burning
from the day you’re born
you’ll always hit the ground running

Best Chorus I've heard in Years

Les Savy Fav

Les Savy Fav

[via FoxyTunes / Les Savy Fav]

This song makes me want to run. As soon as the first riff plays you know this is going to be a rock-n-rolla. I can never get the chorus out of my head once I hear it. Check out the rest of the blog...I am starved for attention. Make yourself at home...its the Song-A-Torium.

Song: The Sweat Descends
Artist: Les Savy Favy

The sweat descends
The sweat scents
One cock sure fox in a house of hens
My mouth will water where the sweat descends

The sweat descends sweet decadence,
lets hope this party never ends
A shiv in the ribs,
Some smoke in the hive,
You live how you live I'll die how i die

Wake me up when we get to heaven,
Let me sleep if we go to hell.
Blame my mouth if the house is burning,
Check my tongue if you still cant tell

The sweat descends,
My psyche bends,
I'll never be the same again.
This soul is twisted but the skin will mend.
My tight young skin covers up a sick palimpsest.

Wake me up when we get to heaven,
Let me sleep if we go to hell.
Blame my mouth if the house is burning,
Touch my tongue if you still cant tell

Make your mark on a darkened dance floor.
Slip across the present tense,
Press up against the skin you care for,
Meet me where the sweat descends

Bobby Bare Jr.

I find myself singing this song a lot when the girls are showing me how "happy" they are to be related to me. I think this was one of the most underrated albums of last year.

New waste of time, welcome aboard

Song: Wolf like me
Artist: TV On the Radio

Say say my playmate
wont you lay hands on me
mirror my melody
transfer my tragedy

Got a curse i cannot lift
shines when the sunset shifts
when the moon is round and full
gotta bust that box gotta gut that fish

My mind's aflame

We could jet in a stolen car
but i bet we wouldnt get too far
before the transformation takes
and bloodlust tanks and
crave gets slaked

My mind has changed
my body's frame but god i like it
my heart's aflame
my body's strained but god i like it

My mind has changed
my body's frame but god i like it
my heart's aflame
my body's strained but god i like it

Charge me your day rate
ill turn you out in kind
when the moon is round and full
gonna teach you tricks that'll blow your mind
mongrel mind
baby doll i recognize
you're a hideous thing inside
if ever there were a lucky kind it's
you you you you

I know its strange another way to get to know you
you'll never know unless we go so let me show you
i know its strange another way to get to know you
we've got till noon here comes the moon
so let it show you
show you now

Dream me oh dreamer
down to the floor
open my hands and let them
weave onto yours

Feel me, completer
down to my core
open my heart and let it
bleed onto yours

Feeding on fever
down all fours
show you what all that
howlings for

Hey hey my playmate
let me lay waste to thee
burned down their hanging trees
it's hot here hot here hot here hot here

Got a curse we cannot lift
shines when the sunset shifts
there's a curse comes with a kiss
the bite that binds the gift that gives

now that we got gone for good
writhing under your riding hood
tell your gra'ma and your mama too
it's true
we're howling forever
